Catechetical Institute Launches First Satellite Site in the Diocese of Duluth

The St. Paul Seminary Catechetical Institute has expanded its reach by establishing its first satellite parish in the Diocese of Duluth at Immaculate Conception in Pine City. This marks a significant milestone for the Institute’s mission to form disciples and deepen understanding of the Catholic faith.

The program is a two-year journey structured around the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church: Creed, Sacraments, Life in Christ and Prayer. The curriculum is divided into four 11-week modules, offering a systematic and comprehensive overview of Catholic teaching. The program is intended for those who wish to deepen their understanding of the faith and explore how Catholic principles apply to daily life, relationships and personal vocation. Graduates receive a certificate of completion and may earn credits toward a theology degree. Beyond academic study, the program emphasizes practical application, encouraging participants to integrate what they learn into their work, family life and parish involvement.

The Pine City initiative began when Karen Wilcox, a graduate of the program, recognized the need for a local site to reduce travel for participants. After proposing the idea to Father Thomas Galarneault, pastor of Immaculate Conception, diocesan approval was granted in April 2025. Despite a tight timeline, classes launched in the fall with 22 participants from six parishes, including Father Thomas himself.

Students range in age from 17 to 79, and the diversity of the group reflects the program’s broad appeal. Two couples are attending together, describing the experience as a way to strengthen their relationship and faith. One participant is discerning the priesthood, while another is discerning the diaconate.

The Pine City class is part of the St. Carlo Acutis class, which includes other groups in Southern Minnesota. Weekly sessions feature small-group discussions, fostering strong community bonds. “The best part is the small group,” says participant Frank Wilcox, who initially hesitated about the two-year commitment. “This isn’t just academics — it deepens your relationship with Christ.”

The program began with a Mass at the Cathedral of St. Paul, celebrated by Archbishop Hebda, who will also preside at the 2027 graduation ceremony. Notable speakers, including Jeff Cavins and Institute Director Kelly Wahlquist, have supported the site, ensuring participants receive the same high-quality experience as those near the St. Paul campus.

Karen Wilcox emphasizes the program’s impact: “You come out changed and empowered to evangelize. When you know the faith better, it’s easier to share it.”

With its successful first year, the Pine City satellite site demonstrates how local initiatives can make faith formation more accessible and transformative for communities.
